Suminagashi is the meditative art form of Japanese paper marbling. The literal meaning sumi : ink and nagashi: spilt/floating. I use a pure water base for the marbling and Japanese stick ink. For the coloured marbling I use artists acrylics, however, still floated onto a water bath with no thickener. It is a time consuming process, with a minimum of control over the materials, which means that the mind is cleared to produce the most beautiful marbling results.
